The game provides both single-player and multiplayer modes, which enable players to venture into the vast, unexplored depths of the ocean, taking on various tasks while managing resources, dealing with environmental hazards, and hostile creatures. As the submarine effectively functions as a lifeline for its crew, an irreparably-damaged vessel often signals the end of a round. In the event that the submarine's hull is damaged, water will begin to flood the vessel, which damages submarine structures and significantly impedes player movement without appropriate equipment, a player trapped in a flooded segment of the sub is liable to suffocate, or in areas with high water pressure, be crushed via barotrauma. Crisis management is a recurrent theme in moment-to-moment gameplay, as players are implicitly encouraged to use their job skills to both avoid and mitigate disaster. Player incompetence can also be a source of disaster, as improperly-maintained ship equipment (such as nuclear reactors or oxygen generators) can quickly render the submarine inoperable. Various hazards will frequently jeopardize the submarine's voyage, such as hostile fauna, parasite outbreaks, and player-controlled traitors. The players are then free to act at their own discretion for the duration of the round, with few, if any, additional objectives provided by the game itself. The submarine's crew are given a mission, which may involve hauling cargo from one outpost to another, hunting hostile undersea wildlife, or recovering alien artifacts. At the start of each game, players are assigned a job, which may provide them access to specialized traits and equipment. Some of the creatures the developers have revealed and some of my time in the pre-alpha version of the game really just scratch that fear itch in the right way. It all sounds really fun and looks (quite frankly) terrifying for a thalassophobic mess like myself. Some may say that sounds awful, but if you've played these sorts of games before, you know that sort of risk makes the reward of survival all that much sweeter. and exploring without the safety of its confines.Īlso like Space Station 13 and its ilk, Barotrauma will be flexible enough to allow players to play honorably and help the team's exploration efforts, or be total dinks and subtly or very obviously ruin the mission for everyone involved. It will take teamwork, knowledge of the game's systems, and a steel will to survive in the frozen depths of Jupiter's moon both within the submarine. Not too different from subversive co-op games like the classic Space Station 13, the game will allow players to take the reigns as one of the submarine's staff, from captain to security officer. It may be humanity's first step into the depths, but the environment is teeming with life most unwelcoming. Barotrauma intrigued me with its name and gritty icon on the Steam Upcoming Games list, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.Ĭurrently in closed alpha, Barotrauma will task players with exploring the underwater depths of Jupiter's frozen moon.
